The State of Andhra Pradesh is strategically located in the Indian sub continent. It has the second largest coastal line in the country with an area of 970 Km. Andhra Pradesh is increasingly being recognized, as the hub of industrial activity in South India. It is the third largest state in the country. Government. It is ranked among the fastest growing state in the country with an 8.35 per cent annual growth.

It is characterised by a large pool of scientific and technical manpower (75% of India's engineering graduates come from the four southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala). Nearly 23 per cent of the software professionals in the United States of America are from Andhra Pradesh.

There are several major industries in operation around Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. They manufacture machine tools, synthetic drugs, pharmaceuticals, heavy electrical machinery, fertilizers, electronic equipments, aeronautical parts, cement and cement products, chemicals, asbestos, glass and watches.

Andhra Pradesh is also home to several leading industrial / IT companies having their presence both in national and international circuits. AP occupies a pride of place in the country in the IT and IT Enabled Services activities. AP is the leading state in the country in using IT for improving the quality of administration and for taking Governance to the doorsteps of every citizen in the state. Almost every village in the state is covered by optical fiber network of BSNL and Reliance providing the communications network. 

The State government is also promoting Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Hyderabad. IBM, Oracle, Signal Tree, Satyam and Motorola have established their corporate schools.

Hyderabad is the financial and economic capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Service Industry is the major contributor, with urban workforce constituting 90% of the total workforce (Employment). Hyderabad is a major centre for pharmaceuticals companies (Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Matrix Lab., Hetero Drug, Aurobindo Pharma ...). The Port of Visakhapatnam, is the gateway to the East Coast of India. It plays a crucial role as the middle point distribution base for Southern, Eastern, Central and Northern states of India. Minor ports are located at Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Bheemunipatnam, Krishnapatnam, Vadarevu and Kalingapatnam.
National Highways passing through Andhra Pradesh constitute 4,104 km.
Of the railways route covering 5,107 km in Andhra Pradesh.
Important airports in the State are located at Hyderabad, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.

Agriculture is the main occupation of about 62% of the people in Andhra Pradesh. Rice is a major food crop and staple food of the State contributing about 77% cent of the foodgrain production. Other important crops are jowar, bajra, maize, ragi, small millets, pulses, castor, tobacco, cotton and sugarcane. Forests cover 23% of the State's area. Important forest products are teak, eucalyptus, cashew, casurina, bamboo, softwood, etc.

Andhra Pradesh has the largest deposits of quality chrysolite asbestos in the country. Other important minerals found in the state are copper ore, manganese, mica, coal and limestone.
